3rd Grade - Henna Hands

Third graders got cultural with this project.  To start, we looked at a bunch of examples temporary henna tattoos from India and discussed their purpose.  We put our own little twist on it and came up with our own symbols to mix with some traditional mehndi symbols that I provided in a handout on a traced cutout of our hands.  We finished it off with by gluing it onto a colored piece of paper for pop.  The kids had a lot of fun trying the intricate symbols and making their artwork look more and more interesting.  Take a look at a few shining examples.

1st and 2nd Grade - Superhero Sticks

Woohoo for summer!  The end of the year snuck up on me, and I really neglected the blog here.  I'll be catching up on our end of the year projects as the weeks go on.

Starting with this simple one-day project:  Superhero Sticks.  I invented this game to play when kids finished projects early.  Along the same lines as 3 Sticks (also a big hit with the kids), students will use the words on the sticks to create a random picture, except this time that picture is a superhero with a sweet nickname.  It works, simply, like this:  pull a green stick from the green container - that's the first word of your superhero - then add the orange stick as your second word.

All my students play this game (kindergarten through sixth grade), and it's been really great.  Here are some examples from just first and second grade, though.

How hilarious is this?
