5th Grade - Zentangle

5th grade had a lot of fun with the opportunity to tell a little about themselves with this Zentangle project.  We started with a letter or shape, and then divided it up into different sections using a variety of lines and patterns.  Then each section was filled with symbols, pictures or words that described some aspect of their personality.  The result is a very unique project from each student.  Take a look at just a few awesome examples from the 5th graders!

1st Grade - Jungle Collage

The Jungle Collage is back!  After some good practice with the line collage, first graders put their line-cutting skills to practical use in this project.  They learned that zig zag lines make a mountain shape, wavy lines make water, and a series of curvy cuts make trees.  We topped it off with a personal touch by adding a character or object to the scene.  Excellent work, first graders!

1st Grade - Line Collage

The first graders started the year reviewing the different types of lines they knew and spent some time practicing making them with scissors in this line collage project.  Very interesting to see how different "wavy" and "zig zag" lines can be.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to school, Wilmington students!  The summer flew by and for the last few weeks the art room has been bustling with activity.  We have a lot of new projects on tap this year to mix in with some of last year's instant classics.  So far, each grade has been working with line in different ways.  The younger kids are building vocabulary and learning about all different types of lines.  The older kids are learning how to interpret lines and use them in various ways in their artwork.  I'll post more pictures as we finish more projects, but here's a taste of what's been going on in Mr. Schmidt's class:

Kindergarten has been practicing making all sorts of different lines with all sorts of different supplies.

Kindergartners putting their new knowledge of line to good use in a watercolor resist painting.

Third graders interpreting blown ink and turning them into monsters.

Third graders giving their monsters a place to live with a colorful background.

Fifth graders expressing themselves with this Zentangle project.
